Facechart for character

I wanted to create a classic look for the housewife, classy yet slightly too much for the day. however the tendencies with these people is that most of the time there going out for lunch and shopping, so a slight unappropriated daytime makeup is appropriate in this situation.

story for my character and wound

Laine Montanari is a housewife, living the life of luxury in her mansion with her business husband and while he was out working late and the maids had finished there shifts for the day, she decided to make herself useful and cook her man a romantic dinner to surprise him on getting his last business deal. Busy in the kitchen she got herself all in a fluster and pouring the water from there organic vegetables through the colander she turns for a second as she hears the door only to pour scolding water on her hand. The night is ruined and she results in spending the rest of the night crying on her husbands shoulder with ice on her hand and moaning about how her neatly manicured hands are ruined,

Mould making

  • Once we was happy with the mould we then had to apply a mask to stop the toxins from the spray being inhaled, standing by the window, standing by the window spray with fixing spray, leave for about 5 minutes until dry, then spray a light coating of petrolease from about 20 cm away from the mould and wait to dry again.
  • Then cut a plastic cup in half and place rim around mould. Use a glue gun to glue around the the cup making sure there are no gaps for the silicone to seep through, Then let the glue dry.
  • Then measure equal amounts of A and B, in my case 50g of A and 50g of B using a separate pair of gloves cups and wooden sticks for A and B as they cant mix half way through as they will react. Once A and B is mixed tap out the bubble by gently hitting the bottom of the cup on the table, pour the mixture into the cup with the mould in, then leave for around an hour for the mould to set.
  • Once the mould negatives are set cut the side of the cup and gently remove the mould.
  • When the mould is out of the plastic cup, wearing gloves use a cotton pad and alcohol to rub the piece to remove all impurities and finger marks, after wear mask and spray with petrolease.
  • Then use super baldiez and alcohol in the ratio of 2:1 (baldiez:alcohol) mix and tap bubbles out. Then brush on a layer of the mixture making sure to cover the whole piece and not filling the wholes of the blisters, let it air dry or use a hairdryer on a cool and low setting to speed the drying process, it will appear matt when dry. When dry apply another layer of the mixture and dry again.
  • Need A B and C sticks, need A and B to be the same measurement to make the actual piece, and then deadener has to be 60% of A and B's weight together. E.g. 16g of A, 16g of B = 32g , 60% = 20g of C. Mix A B and C together and then tap bubbles out. Add the tiniest bit of pigment to mixture mix in and tap again, then pour this mixture into the mould, use a spatula to smooth the top and create a smooth even surface as this will be the part that rests on the skin, then leave to dry appox. an hour.
I really enjoyed this although at first i thought it was quite confusing but when broken down i found it a lot easier. I am looking forward to next week and being able to apply these to our model to see the final result and to see the overall effect in correlation to our characters.

sculpting

In week two of lessons we started to sculpt our design. For this we used a flat service piece of plastic and our clay from our kit along side some tools we have in our sfx kits also. First we had to cut a piece of the clay and because it was cold it was quite hard to model so using a warm setting on a hairdryer we warmed the clay up so it was easier to model the clay. We made our designs using the clay that we smoothed onto the plastic base. First i started with a flat smooth piece of clay and then made three various sized lumps so as to make the blisters. We then had to apply and smooth the clay, especially for blisters as in real life blisters are perfectly smooth. This took a lot longer then i first anticipated, but i was pleased with the final outcome as through persistence i got the piece looking as smooth as i could using both my fingers and the wooden spatula from the kit. I found using my hands was most effect after using the wooden spatula as the warmth from my fingers made it easier to manipulate the clay. I then added some small lines to the rest of  model as this would replicate lined in the skin, i did this using the brush and lightly running the bristles along the clay to make subtle indentations. I am overall pleased with my result although molding the clay to the standard i wanted it took a lot longer then i thought it would, however i know what works best for me now, so i feel if i was to do a similar model again i would know the right techniques to be able to mold quicker.

Burnt hand drawings

After doing my research about second degree burns i then went away and drew a hand with a second degree burn on as i felt this is where i would be placing the burn. After my coloured drawing i then went on to drawing where i wanted to place my burn by drawing around Jess's hand so i knew how big or small my burn could be.

story behind wound

For my wound, second degree burn, i want to create blisters with my mold. I feel for the story behind the wound would be a housewife who was cooking a meal for her and her husband when she scolded her hand with boiling water on her hand when draining the vegetables. the wound is only a couple of hours old, and it would e infected just filled with watery puss that you find in blisters. I want to place the blister on the hand as though she draining the boiling water and because she is a ditsy housewife she managed to pour it on herself.

My Burn

After starting this course i happened the get a second degree burn from steam on my finger and i have been taking pictures as its been developing. going from a blister, to a popped blister to the skin peeling off.

Second degree burns friends stories

When research i decided to find out some of my friends burn stories:
  • When i was small i tripped over in my Nan's house and fell into a gas fire, i believe this was only a first degree burn as i have no scarring on my face.
  • Jess said that she once sat on some straighteners, again first degree burn
  • Another flat mate said that when she was smaller she was sitting near the kitchen counter and three cups of tea fell of and burnt her legs, these blistered and  then popped.

Wound - Second degree burn - research

We got our wounds this week, I am Partnered with Jess and we got second degree burns. Second degree burn is the most common household injuries, especially in children. Second degree burns usually blister and you can get some thickening of the skin. Can be caused from scalding from either hot or boiling liquids. Can also get a second degree burn from fire, including flames from matches, candles and lighters, and lastly you can also get these burns from excessive sun exposure. Second degree burns are more serious because the damage extends the first layer of skin. Second degree burns usually blisters and pops and makes the skin look wet.

Intrests, experience, expectations and fears for special effects

I wanted to do special effects because its an area i haven't studied at all previously and i'm excited to do something completely new, learning new techniques and broadening my skill set. I have had very limited experience in the special effects area, the only experience i have being what we did last year in class. I really feel like i will have to work hard on this area of study as i feel i will find it hard as its not something that comes naturally to me but i feel with hard work and determination i hope i can do well. I am excited about our new topic of human hybrid as i feel we can definitely go our own way with this title. I am also really excited to have a new set of skills that i can use in my later makeup career.
